Cannabis desserts from Magnolia Bakery
Magnolia Bakery, renowned for its iconic desserts, is innovating by converting its famed treats into cannabis-infused edibles. The New York-based dessert vendor is known for its delicious banana pudding and red velvet cake, and these popular flavors will be incorporated into the new limited-edition THC-infused bars. This venture marks Magnolia’s debut into the cannabis industry, offering a fresh perspective on its beloved flavors. The “Swirled Famous Banana Pudding” bar will contain a blend of creamy vanilla pudding, crunchy vanilla cookies, and freeze-dried bananas, with each piece of the ten-piece bar containing 10mg of THC. Its counterpart, the “Red Velvet Piece Ahhh Cake” bar, will incorporate the taste of rich, moist, crimson cake, cream cheese, and chocolate. Each piece of this bar has 10mg of THC and 10mg of CBD, a component that doesn’t induce the euphoric ‘high’ associated with marijuana use. The bars will retail from $18 to $30, depending on the flavor and the state. They will initially be available in Illinois, Nevada, and Massachusetts at Rise Dispensaries starting Wednesday. Magnolia has collaborated with Green Thumb Industries, producers of Incredibles edibles, to manufacture the branded bars. Marijuana is federally illegal, yet approximately two dozen US states have legalized it for adult medical and recreational use. This has piqued consumer interest in edibles, as the stigma surrounding marijuana purchase diminishes. The edible market has expanded beyond the traditional “pot brownies,” boasting a variety of categories and numerous brands, such as gummies, mints, and candy bars. According to a recent report by cannabis research firm Headset, edibles constitute 12% of total weed sales, although they still lag behind flower, vapor pens, and pre-rolls. Last year, edibles generated approximately $2 billion in sales, marking almost a 6% increase from the previous year. Magnolia’s foray into the edibles market could heighten brand awareness and drive revenue growth. Retail analyst Neil Saunders posits that this venture has no real downside for Magnolia, given the evolving liberal perspectives on cannabis. He also notes that these products will be sold exclusively in dispensaries, eliminating exposure to uninterested parties. However, the absence of federal legalization could pose a challenge for national distribution and might deter other brands from testing the edibles market.
